Hello, I have a set of strat plans and see that the neck tapers in thickness from first fret to heal. In your experience are all electric necks like this? Do any have uniform thickness (distance from top of fingerboard to bottom of neck profile)throughout the length and is this the same for acoustics? Thanks for any help. |

It is normal for the neck to taper in thickness as well as width. I don't know of any with a constant thickness, but someone probably builds them that way. Al |

I shape my with a constant thickness and only start the taper at the 10th fret |

What you will find is that if the neck has a taper in its width, which almost any neck does, if the neck does not also taper in thickness, it will feel thinner in your hand as you move up the neck from the first to the last frets. Most acoustic necks will get thicker by anywhere from 50 to 100 thou over their length. |

That .050-.100 in thickness makes a huge difference in the strength and stability of the neck. With any cantilever the deflection is greater the thinner the long arm of that cantilevers. This gradual thickening of the neck make a huge difference in the deflection and strength. |

Ok Tony and Michael....Am i reading that the neck is thicker at the nut end? It don't take much to get me confused! Shane |

opposite. if it was thicker at the nut end of the cantilever the extra thickness would be waisted and of no use. up the fret board is toward the nut and down is toward the neck/body joint. neck need to get thicker the nearer you get to the neck/body joint |
